11th IJERPH Webinar

Advances in Hydrodynamic Cavitation Applications for Environment and Human Health

The AHCA Topic introduced at MDPI, which I am serving as Topic Editor with my colleague Federica Zabini, responds to the need for the systematization of the knowledge about the emerging class of technologies and related methods based on controlled hydrodynamic cavitation processes.

As the class of processes showing unrivalled ability to concentrate energy in liquid media or liquid mixtures, hydrodynamic cavitation offers a convenient way to intensify and accelerate plenty of different reactions and transformations. Degradation of recalcitrant pollutants in waste streams, disinfection and sterilization, solubilization of biomass, integral extraction of natural products, are few examples of fundamental technical fields in which hydrodynamic cavitation shows higher process yields than competing methods.

Based on the interdisciplinary applications of hydrodynamic cavitation, it is not by chance that the AHCA Topic involves major MDPI journals across a wide range of topics and specialties: Antioxidants, a leading journal focused on micronutrients and their biological functions; Foods, with comprehensive coverage of the food products and technologies; IJERPH, which is rapidly growing in the cross-disciplinary fields of environmental research and public health; Processes, which hosts fundamental studies on improved or new technological processes; Energies, covering the broad and fundamental field of energy generation.

Although scalability up to virtually any production capacity has been convincingly proven, industrial applications of hydrodynamic cavitation methods and related technologies, either as single units or integrated in complex processing chains is still hindered by a lack of standardization both on the technological side and on the specific applications and products side. These fundamental issues require further and urgent research.

The goal of this webinar is to present the state of the art of few of the most important applications and perspectives of hydrodynamic cavitation for environment and human health. This goal will be achieved by the next speakers, all outstanding scientists across the world, who have brought fundamental contributions to the main topic and the different fields covered by both this webinar and the AHCA Topic, and paved the way to industrial applications of hydrodynamic cavitation.

Chair

Institute of Bioeconomy, Italian National Research Council, Italy

Introduction
Bio
Physicist, started his career as an atmospheric scientist. Later on, he focused on energy policies, technologies and systems. In the last decade, his research shifted to technological innovation and transfer in the agricultural, forestry and food sectors, including new methods, products and materials based on controlled hydrodynamic cavitation processes. In the field of the green extraction of natural products by means of hydrodynamic cavitation processes, he is co-inventor of the international patent No. WO/2018/029715 “A method and relative apparatus for the production of beer”, in turn associated to the Cavibeer® Trademark, as well as of the Italian patent No. 102022000007307 “Apparatus for dynamically regulating hydrodynamic cavitation processes and related procedure”. He is engaged in several projects related to the production and analysis of extracts of natural products, including related industrial applications. He is co-author of more than 150 scientific papers, books and book chapters, and member of the editorial board for few scientific journals.

Invited Speakers

Faculty of Informatics, ELTE Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest, Hungary

Introduction
Bio
He received a Ph.D. degree in Material Science and Technology in 2007 and a Doctor of Science degree at the Hungarian Academy of Science in 2017. He completed several research stays in Finland, Canada, Japan, India, and the USA from 2007-2018, where he worked with cellulosic materials at micro and nano-level. His current research interests include cellulose, silk-fibroin, bacterial-cellulose nanocomposite fabrication, hydrodynamic cavitation waste-water remediation and bacterial quorum-sensing. Important Honor/Award: Hungarian order of merit: Knight’s Cross (2017) Position: full professor at ELTE University. He has 7 patents.

Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia

Introduction
Bio
Prof. Dr. Matevž Dular is one of the youngest full professors at the University of Ljubljana (Faculty of Mechanical Engineering). He has worked in Germany, France and the USA for more than five years. For seven years, he led two projects for the European Space Agency (ESA), where they developed methods for better understanding and prediction of the thermodynamic effects during pumping of fuel and oxidizer in rocket engines. In 2019, he received the Zois recognition for his scientific achievements and in 2020 he received the prestigious Bessel Research Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. In 2017, only as the fifth researcher in Slovenia, he obtained a project from the European Research Council (ERC), where he is researching the possibilities of environmentally friendly destruction of bacteria and viruses by cavitation. In 2022 he received the second ERC project, which finances proof of concept for wastewater sludge treatment by cavitation.

Department of Drug Science and Technology, University of Turin, Italy

Introduction
Bio
Giancarlo Cravotto is Full Professor of Organic Chemistry at the University of Turin. He became a professor assistant at the University of Turin, after four years of experience in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries. He has been Director of the Department of Drug Science and Technology (2007-2018) and currently he is vice-Director. His research activity in the domain of green organic synthesis and processing, is documented by more than 500 scientific, peer-reviewed papers (H. Index 72, 21,400 citations by Google Scholar), 21 patents, 42 book chapters and 7 books as editor. He is Editor-in-Chief of Processes (MDPI, Basel) and Associate Editor or Editorial board member of several journals. Among several awards the Gold Medal “E. Paternò” 2017-2020 by the Italian Chemical Society.
